About this course
This course covers the methods and best practices aligned with business and technical requirements for modeling, visualizing, and analyzing data using Microsoft Power BI Desktop.
Participants learn to connect and transform data from multiple sources — including relational databases, Excel files, SharePoint, and web data. They then build optimized data models, write calculated measures using DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), and design interactive dashboards for business reporting.
This course also covers AI-powered features built into Power BI Desktop: automated anomaly detection, Key Influencers analysis, Smart Narratives, and natural language Q&A — tools that surface insights without any coding.
The course runs across 5 structured stages with hands-on labs at every stage. Participants complete a full Power BI dashboard from raw data to final published report as their final exercise.
All content maps directly to the four exam domains of the PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst exam. Participants who want to pursue the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential will leave with the foundation to do so.
Who should attend?
This course is suitable for:
- Data analysts and business analysts transitioning from Excel-based reporting to Power BI
- IT professionals supporting business intelligence tools within their organization
- Managers and decision-makers who need to read, build, or commission data dashboards
- Finance, operations, and HR professionals who work with data regularly but have no formal BI training
- Individuals preparing for the PL-300 exam who want structured, instructor-led preparation
No prior Power BI experience is required.
Learning Outcome
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Connect and transform data from multiple sources including databases, Excel, SharePoint, and the web
- Build optimized relational data models using star schema design
- Create calculated fields and business measures using DAX
- Design interactive reports with drill-through navigation, slicers, and bookmarks
- Apply Power BI AI features to detect anomalies, identify key influencers, and generate automated insights
- Query data using natural language via the Q&A visual
- Publish reports and understand row-level security (RLS) basics
- Produce a complete Power BI Desktop dashboard from raw data to final report
Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites for this course. Participants are expected to have:
- Basic familiarity with Microsoft Excel
- A general understanding of what business data looks like
- No prior Power BI experience required
Participants who have completed the Fundamentals of Microsoft Power BI (Desktop) course will find this course a natural next step.
